The Unconventional Truth!
Here is our final film 'The Unconventional Truth'. Overall I really pleased with how it turned out and hope you enjoy it!:)
The Unconventional Truth survey
As part of the feedback for our film, I emailed various different people a set of questions in which I asked them if they could answer and send back to me..Here are a couple of my findings:)
Emma, aged 18
A film noir as I feel it is quite obvious due to the use low key lighting and costuming for all characters.
2.What was your favourite aspect of the opening scene and why?
I really liked the transition from the graveyard to the school corridor as it was a really good way to make a transition from one setting to another without boring the audience.
3.Do you feel that the credits were clear and effective? And if so why?
Yes definitely, they were clear, precise and professional and could easily be read and also linked in with the genre of film noir.
4.Do you feel that the concept of the plot/storyline was easy to grasp and understand?
Yes easily! I understood immediately, and I feel that the use of the voiceover and flashbacks helped me to fully grasp the basis of what the films plotline was.
5.Were the characters you saw believable/realistic?
Yes because of the use of older actors and younger actors who portrayed people their actual ages so it make it so much more realistic because they fitted in with the same age range.
6.Did you feel that the use of the camera/shots/angles/movements and editing were effective?
Yes they helped to create an impact on what type of character and persona each separate character had.
7.Did you feel that the lighting was effective and helped to set the mood?
Yes because there was dark lighting on the killer the most of the time and lighter lighting on Jake most of the time so it should the contrast between the two really well.
8.Did you like the choice of music used throughout and why?
Yes! I loved it, it really impacted the emotions that the characters were feeling and made me feel the emotion they were feeling too.
9.If any, what areas do you feel could be improved overall?
I can’t actually think of any….
10.Did you feel that the title of the film ‘The Unconventional Truth related to the character/storyline of the film? Why?
Yes because we see how the truth is kept away from Jake for such a long time and how it has an ending that you do not expect that is entirely ‘unconventional’!
11.Do you have any other feedback at all?
No..other than well done!!
Ben, aged 17
THE UNCONVENTIONAL TRUTH SURVEY
1.What genre of film would you say this film is and why do you feel inclined to feel this way?
A film noir because of the use of the detective style storyline.
2.What was your favourite aspect of the opening scene and why?
I really like the tracking shot that followed rosy and dom down the characters, kept me intrigued to see who they were going to be.
3.Do you feel that the credits were clear and effective? And if so why?
Yes because they were easily understandable and didn’t detract from the filming itself surrounding it.
4.Do you feel that the concept of the plot/storyline was easy to grasp and understand?
Yes because the voiceover at the beginning made it clear but also without giving too much away at an early stage.
5.Were the characters you saw believable/realistic?
Yes, I liked the use of the older character to play the dad as it made it a lot believable.
6.Did you feel that the use of the camera/shots/angles/movements and editing were effective?
Yes because they were used smartly to help emphasise certain emotions that the characters were feeling at that point in time.
7.Did you feel that the lighting was effective and helped to set the mood?
Yes because it showed variety of light and dark lighting depending on the mood of the scene.
8.Did you like the choice of music used throughout and why?
Yes because it added an extra sense of drama for the audience as they watched it.
9.If any, what areas do you feel could be improved overall?
Maybe not so much talking in the pub scene….it went on for quite a while.
10.Did you feel that the title of the film ‘The Unconventional Truth related to the character/storyline of the film? Why?
Yes because it represents the lies and deceit between the characters of Jake and Scarlet.
11.Do you have any other feedback at all?

Overall I am pleased with the feedback I got as I feel the comments were very fair and generally very positive towards our film which is always nice to hear!

My Final film reviews
Here is my final film review page. Overall I am really pleased with the final outcome of my piece as I feel it includes all aspects in which I feel to all be key elements into a good clear and stand out film review page. I feel that I have achieved my purpose to make it look like it has come straight out of a magazine due to the fonts, style and colour scheme that I have used. I feel that it looks really clean cut and professional and therefore this making it more interesting for people to look at.
Below is a short video in which you can look deeper into the actual reviews that I have written for both LA Confidential and our own film The Unconventional Truth. I have sliced both pages in half so that you can get a clear view into more intricate detailing that I have used within my double page spread.
Making my film review page
Here is a video of me explaining how I created my double page spread of a film review from both LA Confidential and The unconventional truth.
Film Review research
As part of my research into creating my own film review pages, I decided to look on various different websites at film reviews to get a better understanding for the layout, font style/colours that they used and what aspects I felt would work well and what would not when it came to creating my own. I decided to focus on Empire magazine online and Heat magazine online (Heatworld).

Public Research
As part of my research/audience research into the Film Noir/Neo-Noir genre I created a survey in which I asked 30 random people of ages between 13-42+ a set of different questions surrounding the genre itself and how/where they would be most inclined to both watch the film and how much they would be most willing to pay to watch these films.
Here are my findings..

The Unconventional Truth viewing
Today we held a viewing for our finalised film The Unconventional Truth. We managed to sort out a free classroom in our school and gathered as many people as we could together to watch our film. We decided to gather mainly 16-18 year olds of both male and female, as we felt this was the most appropriate age bracket for our film. Overall the response was really positive and everyone agreed that the storyline and plot was easy to follow yet kept interesting by the choice of subtle enigma codes and hints throughout the film. They all also agreed on the fact that they really like the plot/character twist at the end that we had by the character of Scarlet killing her dad, which the majority of people said they expected to be Jake.
We got everyone to write down a list of things that they liked and did not like about the film, here is some of the feedback that we were given.

Advertising techniques to promote our film
This is a short video of me exploring the different ways in which I feel we could advertise our film in order to be able to reach out to all different aged audience members in order to make them interested in our film.
Dark Night Productions..
This is a video of me explaining the idea behind our production company logo and the fonts that we used.
Production Company logo/font research
This is video of me exploring different Production Companies logo's and font's used and explaining why I personally feel they work or do not work and what aspects I may take from them and incorporate into our own Production Company logo.
Our Production Company final name...
'DARK NIGHT PRODUCTIONS'
The name that we decided on for our Production Company name is Dark Night Productions. We originally started with Black Night Productions but decided to change it as we felt that the 'Black' side of it appeared as though it would be more aimed towards the horror/thriller genre of film. We felt that 'Dark Night' also worked better as it had a better understanding than that of Black Night which we felt did not make complete sense.
We liked the idea of having 'Night' in the title as we felt night time was a key convention of Film Noir/Neo-Noir and reflected the more dramatic scenes that take place as these films reach their climax's and the drama evolves.
Overall we are really pleased with the title that we have come up with for our Production Company as we feel that not only does it well represent the Film Noir genre of film but also the plot line of our film and symbolises the unexpected 'dark' ending to our film.

Our chosen Production Company- Focus features
This is a video of me explaining why we chose to have Focus Features as the Production Company/Distributer behind our film 'The Unconventional Truth'. I explore the ways in which the Neo-Noir film 'Brick' (that Focus Features distributed) impacted us as a group and the ideas that we had, I also explore the box office and reviews that 'Brick' itself received once it was released.

My finished second poster

This is my second poster that I designed. I am pleased with the outcome as I feel I have incorporated a variety of different key conventions of film noir features. For example the use of the contrast between the red and the white writing, this suggesting the idea of danger vs. innocence. Also the use of the red nails and lipstick on the femme fatale helps to give the audience a perspective of what genre the film is based around without giving too much away about the character herself.
The use of the high contrast to differientate between the highlighted and shadowed areas I feel works really well as it could be seen as representing the idea of the split personality of the two characters; they both have a darker side that counteracts their innocent and pure exteriors, which leaves the audience thinking about where the plotline of the film will take their characters and were they will end.
The use of the quotations from proffessional companys such as Empire and Daily Mail (used here) I feel helps to add a more realistic and sophisticated finish to the poster to make it seem more believeable as a genuine film poster. This also being reinforced by the use of the 'coming soon' and production company rights in the smaller font at the bottom below the title.
Overall, I am fairly pleased with the outcome of my second poster as I feel it has grasped the key asprects and conventions of a stereotypical film noir aswell as giving the audience an inkling into what they can expect from the film itself, without giving too much away.

Character analsysis
This is a short video of me explaining the three main characters in our film noir; the femme fatale (Scarlet), the main protagonist/hero figure (Jake) and the villian (Scarlet's dad). And exploring the ways in which they show stereotypical conventions of their roles within the film and also how they subvert them.

Progress so far..
This is a short video of Rosy and I discussing the progress that we have made so far surrounding the editing and filming side of our film. We also speak about what we have completed so far and what is still left to do.
Getting creative!
Today when filming we had a slight issue with the lighting. We were aiming to have a 'cupboard cam' in which we were going to place the camera inside of a cupboard and see the character of Scarlets dad reach in and take a glass out. Yet when we tested this we realised that the surrounding light was much too dark meaning that we could barely see his silhouette. Therefore we decided to take matters into our own hands and create our own cupboard! Above is a video to explain how we did it.
Production company ideas

Group Film Review Analysis
Today during our Media lesson, as a group we decided to look at a few previous film reviews from magazines and analyse them to get an idea of what would and would not work when it came to both designing and reviewing our own film poster and review.
Photoshoot for posters
Today we used the photography studio and lights to take our photographs for our film posters. We used Rosy and Jake as the main focus for our poster but also took some photographs and close up shots of Doms face incase we decided to use more characters for our final posters.

The Unconventional Truth tester posters
Here are two posters in which I have personally designed yet are still a working progress that I will eventually use for our fim noir 'The Unconventional Truth' once they are finished. We used the school photography studio to take the pictures for our posters, we used a variety of different lights camera flashes in order to get the contrast and shadowing that can be seen on their body and faces.
The top poster is my first attempt and although I like the design and they way in which the text and photograph are set out, I am not keen on the overall look of the poster itself. I feel that the top left hand side of the poster looks bare as though something else extra is needed. Although I really like the shadowing on Rosy's face, I think that the lighting on Jake lets the poster down and make does not help the photograph to live up to its full potential, this not helped by the pixelated look that the poster has which happened when uploading it.
The bottom poster was my second attempt and I feel that it is a lot stronger. I like the use of the dark shadowing that covers the majority of the right side of Rosy's face and the left of Jakes, showing that the two characters are contrasting one another either through their characterisations or they're actual agendas within the plot.
The use of the bold light that is focusing on Rosy's red lips and red nails help to promote her femme fatale character to the audience before they have even seen the film, it also helps us to view her as a mysterious and seductive character as the rest of her face and body are in a contradictory dark shadow. By using a matching shade of red for the word "heart", it links the two characters seen in the poster together showing that although they may have different alternative motives, they in actual fact need one another to help complete these agendas.
The angle at which the photograph was taken also helps to distinguish the differences between the two characters as we see Rosy facing directly into the camera with a subtle smirk showing that she is confident and has the ability to manipulate people in order to get what she wants. Yet, by having her slightly behind Jake, it shows that she is hiding a big secret and keeping it to herself, yet by having her loosely grasping onto Jakes shoulder it links the two together giving the impression that she is linked to him in some way and in firm control of his actions; showing a dominant feature to her character.
By having the character of Jake in the forefront of the shot shows that he is the lead character within the film, yet by having his eyeline looking slightly upwards towards the left hand side shows that he is perhaps not as straightforward as he may first seem. The bright light beaming onto his eye adds a sense of vulnverability to his character and leaves the audience to believe that he is the "heroic" type character to the plot, however by then having half of his face shaded it could possibly be revealing that he has a split personality, and that perhaps his deeper thoughts within do not quite run parallel to his vulnerable exterior.
The unconventional truth...
When thinking of a name for our Film Noir, we knew that we needed to in some way have it linked towards the secrecy and deceit that our plot is based upon. We were having a discussion about how we felt that we needed the word 'truth' in our title as it gave a subtle hint towards our storyline yet without giving to much away.
After brainstorming a few ideas, I came up with the idea of naming our film 'The unconventional truth'. The rest of the group members agreed that it was a good name as it fitted in with our plot yet also left a bit of imagination to the audience.
I thought of the name as I was trying to think of a word that described the idea of hiding the truth and secrecy. The word unconventional is another way of interperating the mysterious, distinct and unorthodox plot in which our film involves with its hidden enigma codes and subtle hints towards the final scene. It made sense as it linked with the idea of the unknown and not knowing what to expect, yet by then adding in the word 'truth' at the end it shows the idea of not knowing what is going to happen and how everything is not perhaps as it first may seem.
The wording itself for our film title 'The unconventional truth' we felt also had a nice rhythm to it and has a sort of darkness behind it that no one can understand until they watch the film.
We then realised we needed to think of a short punch line in which linked to our newly agreed upon film title and the storyline itself. After mapping out some possible ideas, Rosy came up with the slogan "Truth was in his heart, tragedy was in her mind". We all imediately agreed upon this as we felt it had all the perfect ingrediants for the perfect punch line; it was neither too short nor too long, it included the characterisation of both the main characters of Scarlett and Jake, the line itself linked in with both the title and plot of our film and we felt would leave the audience with a sense of curiousty as they thought about what the twist and contrasting 'his and her' emotions could represent.

Filming day 4
We re-filmed the scenes involving Jake, Dom and Rosy at school. We decided to re-shoot these as the transitions between shots did not flow as well as we had hoped and also we felt that we did not use a wider variety of shots, angles and movements as we could have done to take full advantage of the setting.
The first time we filmed these scenes I sat on a moveable chair and handheld the camera whilst Toby pushed me in order to create the tracking shot that followed the characters feet/legs as they walked down the corridor. Yet, when back chanelling through the takes that we did, we noticed that the movement was not entirely still and that the camera kept moving in and out of focus due to the lack of experience that we had with using that specific camera.
This time round, we came across a camera device in which enabled us to attach the camera to a piece of equipment in which acted as a moving tripod rather than a standstill one. The device allowed us to attach the camera at the front section and be able to move the different levers in order to create either a low, high or canted angle shot. By having the bar that ran across the right side of it, we were able to move the camera up and down in a smooth transition in which allowed us to create panning shots which we used to move up and down the body of the characters in which helped to reveal their identities as it moved from their feet to their faces. The fact that it was on wheels also helped a lot as it meant that we could create a much smoother and accurate tracking shot/movemenent when following the characters as they walked down a corridor.
Although it took us a while at first to get to grips with understanding how the device moved and worked, in the end we were all able to use it confidently and felt completely able to create the effective shots and movements that we were aiming for leaving day 4 of filming as a great success.

Editing- Voiceover
Here are a couple of photographs that we took when editing today and setting up a voiceover. We selected tools then the 'Voice Over' option on final cut express as we needed Jake to do a voiceover for the graveyard scene at the beginning. Despite an initial bit of background noise, over all the voiceover went smoothly and the sound was neither too loud nor too quiet. It fitted in perfectly with the scene and is used as a way to allow the audience to get the background information behind the plot of the film itself.

Editing Day 2
Today we edited the scene inside the Femme Fatale's house which involve both her and her dad. So far I feel that the editing is going very well. We are choosing the best clips and trying to show a wide variety of different camera movents, angles and shots. In this scene, this is the first time in which the 'villian' is seen so we felt that it was very important to have him portraying in the correct way. We decided to shoot him in a variety of angles and one that worked well was a low angle which showed that he is in control of the situation and used to being the most dominant. When watching what we had edited so far back we found that the lighting was worked really well so we decided to enhance this further by making the contrast slightly higher and the brightness level slightly lower.

Filming day 3
Today we re-filmed the scences in which were set at the pub involving the characters played by Rosy and Jake. After a previous group discussion we decided that we needed to include more close-up shots and camera movements in order to show a wider variety of shots within our film. We therefore did shots that involved a tracking shot that moved from the outside of the pub to the inside which then panned round from Jake's face to the opposing side of Rosy's as they sat at a table. We also did close up shots of their eyes, lips and hands which created an emotive effect which linked in with what they were speaking at certain points. We also did a few reflective shots by using a window to reflect the faces of both characters. Overall, I felt that the day filming was very successful.

Editing day 1
Today on final cut express, we edited the graveyard scenes of Jake when he is looking down at his Fathers gravestone. We also started to think of possible song choices for this opening sequence in which we felt would fit in best with the scenery and storyline yet without being too heavy in which we would be unable to hear the voiceover of Jake speaking about his father.
When researching song choices we discovered that the band 'The XX' had the best style of music in which fitted in with our theme and grungey/indie styling ideas. We also decided that whatever piece of music we would use would have to be an instrumental version otherwise the voicover would be unclear and more difficult for the audience to understand. We then narrowed it down to the three following songs.
The XX - Missing
The XX - Angels
The XX - Intro
The majority of our grouped decided on the song "Intro" as there are firstly no lyrics in the opening section yet also because it linked in with the down-beat, sad theme of the specific sequence in which it is being included, yet without being too 'depressing' in which we felt may perhaps bore our audience. Yet the use of the underlying beat helps to liven the piece of music and also keep the audience interested as it moves on to the next scene/location.

Day 1 of filming

Our first day of filming was set in school along the corridors and near a set of lockers. These scenes including the main characters of Scarlett (played by Rosy Vega) and Jake (played by Jake England). We included a wide variety of shots, angles and movements with the camera in attempt to see what tension and emotions we could possibly create with the high, low, medium angles and shots that we used to portray certain characters. Overall we feel that for a first day, filming went fairly well and we are pleased with the quick progress we are making.

Group discussion about personal key item
As a group, we have finally decided that the personal key item in which is the main focus of the film will be a "dof tag" necklace. The necklace will have belonged to Jakes father which was taken from him by Scarlet (The femme fatales) father when he murders him. The dog tag is a personal item in which dates back in the family from Jakes grandfather who was in the war yet when he passed away was left to his father in which would have been given to Jake.

We are aiming to film all of the scenes in which we have created within a time period of 4 filming sessions (4 days). However this scheduele may possibly vary slightly on certain occasions due to work commitments on our group and chosen actors behalves.
Scenes:
|
Reasons:
| |
Day 1 Filming - 13th
Feb
|
2, 3 and
5
|
All these scenes are located
within the school so we thought that it would obviously be a good idea to film
them all at once. We are going to do it on Wednesday 6th because all of our
group are about from 4th period onwards meaning we had 4th, lunch and 5th
periods to film. Jake is also about for this time as well as other friends so if
any extras are needed it means we can use them.
|
Day 2 Filming - 16th
Feb
|
1
|
This scene is to be located at
the graveyard. It will need to be at dusk, beginning to get dark. Only Jake will
be needed as an actor for this and it shouldn't take too
long.
|
Day 3 Filming - 21st
Feb
|
4
|
We will be on half term his
week so it will a great time to get filming done. This scene will take place in
the pub and will require it to be dark. Our guess is that we would need to go
later nearer closing time because we don't want it to be too busy otherwise it
might affect our sound and filming however we don't want to go when it's
completely empty because their won't be a very good
atmosphere.
|
Day 4 Filming - 23rd
Feb
|
6 and
7
|
These scenes are both located
at the Femme Fetales house. They will require Jake, Rosy and Michael. For scene
7 it will need to be dark however for scene 6 it will have to be light so it may
require us to just wait around for a bit for it to get dark but in this time we
can go over shots from scene 6.

Possible outfits for the lead male and female
As a group we sat and discussed possibly styling ideas for our two main characters-Jake and the femme fatale. We decided that we wanted to keep the characters modern and up to date yet also include some traditional elements of film noir styling. We decided that we would dress the femme fatale in mainly red and black as we felt this best fitted her character-seductive yet destructive. We thought it would be best to keep the styling for Jake more simple and less dramatic so that it ran parallel with his shy and timide characterisation.
This outfit would be used in the scene in which we are shooting at the pub. She is wearing a tightly fitted, strapless red velvet dress with a black leather jacket. The red of her dress reveals the idea that she is dangerous and a very confident character, yet the use of the strapless element suggests that she is quite seductive and revealing also-a typical key feature of classic femme fatale styling. The use of the leather jacket brings the outfit to a modern era and also adds an edge to her outfit by making it more casual, as well as being used as a way of covering up her bare shoulders portraying the idea that her guard is up and she perhaps hiding a secret from Jake, as well as the audience.
For a second possible outfit for the femme fatale, we decided on this one. She is wearing a high necked overlapping strap design black blouse with a mid length maroon pencil skirt with black waistband. The use of the deep, earthy colours suggest the idea that she has a dark past and is very unconventional with the truth. The overlapping cross over design at the top of her blouse portrays the idea that she is a complicated character and her role within the film could go in any direction; good or bad. The mesh effect on her blouse once again represents the idea of the seductive and revealing side to her character. Yet this then contrasting to the sophisticated, mid length of her skirt as we see a more demure side to her character who is not showing too much flesh-perhaps portraying the idea that she is quite a reserved female.
This is the third and final styling idea that we had in mind for the femme fatale. She is wearing a floaty, one shouldered scarlet red pleated dress. We thought that this outfit could be used to show a more elegant and womanly side to her character. The diagonal neckline could represent the idea that her life is not as straight forward as it seems, as well as portraying the idea that her life is going downhill as we delve deeper into the film- the secret comes out and she has been caught out, a possible sign for a bad ending for her character? The red of the dress suggesting danger yet also an alluring approach to her personality. The style of the dress portrays the use of flapper fashion/dresses from the 1920's with its use of bold A-line pleats and straight fitted design; this therefore being used as a way of modernising a classic design as well as taking a typical convention of femme fatale styling but using it as a way of bringing it into a new era from a film noir to a neo-noir.
We have also decided that for the character of the femme fatale, she will be wearing red lipstick in the majority of her scenes as an almost trademark look of hers as well as linking it to a stereotypically enticing styling choice for the femme fatale.
For the role of Jake, we decided to keep his styling to a minimal in order to not give too much away about his character so that his actions take full control of what he does within the film and adding a shock factor to his actions also. For this outfit we thought it could be used for the school scene in which we see him being beaten up by the femme fatale's boyfriend. He is dressed very casually in an oversized grey jumper and black trousers. The grey of his jumper suggests the idea that he is used to blending in and fading into the background. Yet this contrasting to his role within the film as we see him as the main lead character who takes full control in solving the mystery of his dads death. The use of the black trousers suggest the idea of his dark past and possible troubled childhood due to the murder of his father.
For his second outfit, we decided to have him in a more formal yet still casual attire. We thought that this could be used in the pub scene in which shows himself and the femme fatale in an intimate situation. He will be wearing the same black trousers as in the previous picture yet this time with a checkered blue shirt. The use of the blue reveals the idea of him coming out of his shell and being more adventurous and endeering-either surrounding the idea of delving into the details of his fathers murder or simply due to his blossoming relationship with the femme fatale. The checkered pattern of his shirt also revealing the troubled past that he has had and how he seen to be in a complex role in trying to solve out the mystery, yet possibly he is unsure of which direction and lead he should take.
